Antique Victorian corset cuff bangle bracelet. 18k gold, rubies, enamel. Made in France, 19th century.
Measurements: Weight is 49.5 grams. Approximately 1 inch (29mm) wide. Inner diameter approximately 2 1/4 inches (6cm)
Description : Extraordinary bangle bracelet. The wide shape is made to conform to the shape of the arm and actually extends from the wrist towards the upper arm. The bangle is composed of 4 segments. The 'outer' pair are hinged with fabulous French quality workmanship making the joins all but invisible. The inner/central segments are co-joined on the inside, but from the viewer's perspective, they are joined by a trio of ribbons, like a corset, each arching band finely set with pink rubies. The pink of the rubies is offset by green enamelling - green being the compliment to red and therefore most clearly contrasting with the gems. The green enamelling is set in a gold border with pointed edges, giving the impression of a belt and adding to the corset image. The 3 'belts' continue in 3 bands of enamel - two cream-colored and the central one very French royal blue guilloche enamel. While the blue band is adorned with a simple gold inner detail, the two cream-colored enamel bands are worked with scrolling gold foliage. The enamel bands are bordered by very beautifully worked engravings of scrolling foliage. Very solid.
Fantastic arrangement to expand or contract the bangle according to the size of the wearer's arm. The tongue in groove clasp can be slipped across a possible 4 stations to fit the wearer.
Marks and Metal: Tongue has French owl mark for 18k.
Condition: Enamel is certainly not perfect, but still looks good and the gold engraved detail does a lot to hide the small flaws/losses. Hinges and clasp in good order. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
