    Description

black duck decoy Charles P. Wilbur Island Heights, NJ ca. 1940
A rare preening hand carved hollow cedar blackduck decoy by Charles (Pete) Wilbur ( 1905-1990) Island Heights, New Jersey, circa from the late 1930's- early 1940's.This is one of his earlier decoys with carved eyes, before he painted the eyes and before one he started using glass eyes in the 1950's and before he bought his branding iron in 1956.  Measures  14 & 1/2   inches from chest to tail, carved nostrils and mandril, applied ballast weight, missing the anchor tie, restored paint ( new on the body except for the bottom and bill which is in a old in use repaint), had a recent ugly  spray paint job done to it and needed to be partially repainted.See the March/April 1990 issue of "Decoy Magazine" for a nice article on him. Guaranteed to be as described/pictured.
NOTE; most of the shine on the decoys is from the camera lights
