Soapstone penguin hand carved and decorated in Kenya (turquoise).
Penguin measures approximately (2.25" tall), (1" wide)
Hand carved in Kenya.
As each penguin is individually handmade it may vary slightly from the attached pictures!
Soapstone or "Kisii" stone as it is known in Kenya is quarried in the town of Tabaka in Western Kenya.
Each piece of stone is carved using hand tools such as machetes, saws, adzes, and knives. After carving, the pieces are sanded, dyed then each piece is decorated with an incised design.
The sales of these carvings bring valuable employment to the area where most households are involved in some form of the production process.
A little about me - Everything for sale is handpicked my me.  I travel to Africa 2 - 3 times a year to buy
the best quality items available in the marketplace.  This has been my primary occupation for more then 25 years now.  I sell to galleries and stores across the country and also exhibit twice yearly at NYNOW.  I really enjoy my job, I have friendships which date to my first trips, and I get to travel and interact with people who appreciate the culture and workmanship that goes into each item.
I consider myself to have a very fortunate lifestyle.
