Vintage Scoter Duck Decoy from Maine, Horse Shoe Ballast

Description

This fellow is Maine scoter decoy with a large old horse shoe for a ballast weight.  I think it was probably a heavy item before that but now it has a massive weight.   The head is quite beautifully carved but doesn't look much like a scoter, although it's supposed to be a scoter.  The thick bottom board was added on during the carving to make it deeper and giving it a roly-poly appearance.  Measures 16 1/2" long and the body is 13 1/2" x 8" x 5" not including the horse shoe.  Obviously, there is some rot on the right side of the upper surface of the body, which is an odd place for the to be.  Maybe it was stored under a leak.  The head swivels loosely around...it's meant to.
